ESPN reported on Tuesday (Korea time) that San Francisco has signed Verlander to a one-year contract. The terms and conditions of the deal have yet to be revealed. "Verlander, who will turn 42 in February, will join San Francisco for his 20th major league season. This contract means Verlander will return to the National League after playing briefly for the New York Mets in 2023," Yahoo Sports reported.
Yahoo Sports said, "Verlander is one of the most decorated pitchers of his generation. He is a nine-time All-Star and three-time winner of the Cy Young Award for the Detroit Tigers and Houston Astros. In 2011, when he first won the Cy Young Award for Detroit, he was also named the American League MVP, and after moving to Houston, he added to his career two more Cy Young Awards in 2019 and 2022. He was a key player in the pitching staff in Houston, playing as a winner of the 2017 and 2022 World Series."
After the 2022 season, he signed with the Mets as a free agent and returned to Houston at the 2023 trade deadline. Last year, he played in 17 games for Houston, where he was 5-6 with a 5.48 ERA.
"Verlander is a future Hall of Fame player," MLB.com said. "He is an MVP and two-time ERA title holder. Although he suffered from injury last year, veteran Verlander showed his presence at the clubhouse and recruited him in anticipation of his performance in the playoffs."
"The San Francisco Giants, led by new president Buster Posey who took over the management section of the baseball league, also sought to recruit the biggest free agent, Burns, who signed a contract with Arizona. In the early days of the offseason, we hired shortstop Willy Adames on a seven-year contract," he added.
Burns, San Francisco's target, signed a six-year, 210 million-dollar contract with Arizona and left as a rival team. San Francisco also missed out on Snell ahead of Burns. Snell signed a two-year contract with San Francisco ahead of the opening last year. However, Snell can become an FA again due to opt-out after the first season ends. Snell, who showed great performance in the second half of the season, declared himself an FA and signed a five-year, 182 million-dollar contract with the Dodgers.
